Get to know your fellow Rotarians better. Join us this month in Brighton for stimulating conversation, tidbits of inside information, fun and fellowship outside our regular Friday meetings.
For example this past Wednesday at Jameson's you would have heard about an opportunity at Caretel Inn to train for a CNA certificate AND get paid $9 an hour. It's a three-week class to become a Clinical Nursing Assistant. Then, Caretell will hire you for $17 an hour. Seriously!
Or learn about the Masons and how there used to be millions in the USA right after WWII, but like all volunteer and fraternal organizations, numbers of members have dwindled. There are about 25,000 in Michigan. Did you know that Shriners are Masons?

October 20: District 6380 Dynamic Polio Speaker Event: Rotary District 6380 is pleased to partner with the Literati Book Store on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. to present a conversation with noted author, Jim Tobin, in support of End Polio Now.
The evening will feature James Tobin in conversation discussing his books on President Franklin D. Roosevelt: THE MAN HE BECAME: HOW FDR DEFIED POLIO TO WIN THE PRESIDENCY, and his most recent adaption for young adults: Master of his Fate- Roosevelts Rise From Polio to the Presidency.
This is a virtual event and all donations as well as some of the book proceeds will go directly to our District 6380's Rotary’s End Polio Now initiative. Additionally, tickets are bundled with a set donation amount and a copy of either The Man He Became, or Master of His Fate, are available.

The VINA Tailgate has been a Livingston County tradition since 2008 but we had to go virtual in 2020…it just wasn’t the same. The competition for fundraising supremacy for VINA between “Sparty” and “Blue” just doesn’t work as well in the virtual world.
BTW, Sparty now leads the annual affair 7 wins to 5…just saying, Michigan, it might be time to step up your game.

The 2022 Midnight in the Tropics annual fundraiser is coming! Usually it is held in FEBRUARY but this year it is moving to Saturday, March 5th at Crystal Gardens Banquet Center in Howell. So save the date and gather donations!
The beneficiaries you club members selected for our fundraising efforts are Reaching Higher, Special Ministries, a program of Livingston County Catholic Charities, and our own LSRC Foundation.
Many thanks to the LSRC Foundation Board for establishing the rules and rubrics for this year's nominations of beneficiaries. They always are open for suggestions to improve the process.

I've recently spoken to Rhonda Callahan from Torch 180. Rhonda stated that she has a clean up project at the building in Fowlerville as well as a need for help moving items from a storage unit in Brighton to an new storage unit.
Please respond to me if you're interested in helping with this project. I need to know how many can help so I can get an idea of when to schedule the day.

WALK to END ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE
The Annual Brighton Walk for the Alzheimer’s Association was held on Saturday, October 2, in Downtown Brighton, and Rotary was well represented. LSCR joined forces with the Howell Rotary, in a team captained by Nick Proctor. This joint club effort generated $4,685 for the cause. In addition to Nick, the team included Bill Park, Robert Ellis, Linda Carey and Peggy Hall-Davenport. Other Howell Rotarians in attendance included Patti Griffith, Holly Ward-Lamb and Jeanne and Greg Clum.
Sandie and Don Cortez (Howell) served as Co-Chairs for the Brighton Walk and had their own strong and successful team. LSRC member Jamie Scott walked with Team Willows of Howell, while Rotarians Heather Aeschliman (Howell) and Mark Robinson (LSRC) walked with Team LCCC-Be Our Guest. Carole Bullion-Mincy was the captain of the Brighton Rotary/Liberty Team, which raised $4,775. The Hartland Rotary and the Fowlerville Rotary also had participanting teams.
The morning started out just a bit on the cool side, but warmed nicely for the Walk, and the mood within the crowd was hopeful. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, the Brighton Walk generated $200,156, making it the most successful Walk in Michigan. More than 700 participant registered, serving as members of 130 teams -- an excellent example of Rotarians in Action!!!!

[*] It is the 6th leading cause of death in the USA, and the only one in the Top Ten that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed down.
[*] In 30 years, there will be at least 16 million people in America diagnosed with a form of dementia.
[*] About 66 percent of people with Alzheimer's are WOMEN

LSRC VICTORY GARDEN CLEAN UP DAY
There's not quite so much work to do as this time of year for the harvest, so a workday has been re-scheduled for Saturday, October 16 from Noon - 2 pm.
We need Rotarians to wield shovels and rakes and implements of destruction to clear out the garden, put the scraps into the compost pile and put away everything for the winter. [I think. I may be wrong. Won't be the last time. The Garden collected more than 2,000 pounds of fresh produce for Gleaners this year says Jim Watters. A big thank you to Stephanie Nerby for coordinating this year's efforts.]

Yes, our District will be traveling to the city of Detroit on October 17th to promote our Rotary District 6380 as well as support the runners and especially cheer on our fellow Rotarian runners at this Year's Detroit Marathon - WooWoo!!
Lake Orion Sunrise Rotarian and Director of this year's Marathon's Hydration Stations Julie Barnes Mauer and myself, are teaming together to [wo-]man support water stations throughout the course. We want to engage as many District clubs as possible to display their Rotary District banners and other marketing material and promote our Rotarian Service above self passion all the while supporting and providing the runners with fluids at assigned stations along the course.
Wow what could be more fun and exhilarating for all of us spending the day outside with thousands and thousands of your BEST friends doing good for others as we cheer on our fellow Rotarian runners and keep all runners hydrated!
I encourage you ALL to sign up today even our Canadian family if possible pending border crossing and bring your family, friends, club members to this fun and exciting event in Downtown Detroit.
Lastly, as an added bonus for volunteering, we will all receive a Detroit Marathon Fleece Hooded Jacket - Wowsa!! So hurry and sign up today and plan to attend our first organization meeting on October 5th -- more info coming soon. I promise!
